November 2013 Update

Resurfacing of Road-

As many of you have witnessed, NCDOT did some much needed resurfacing of the most of our paved area. I have been in contact with their representative who tells me they will need to let Phase 1 pack and cure until spring. At that time they will complete Phase 2 that entails a paint crew to paint the lines for traffic. Kenny Renfro has volunteered to paint the parking lines for us also in the spring. He tells me the paint will soak through if we don’t wait. The only cost we have had to incur has been the paint for this project. This was about $186.00. The maintenance department added curb blocks out front to protect the fence line. These have been set are in place. This was a much needed project and we appreciate NCDOT, YCS Board of Education and the maintenance and transportation departments.

PBIS Celebration –

We have had our first PBIS celebration for the year which involved 370 students. Students had PJ day and watched a video as a reward for their good behavior. Keep up the good work!!

Technology –

We have received 180 Chrome Books in the media center. Mrs. Fox is in the process of processing those now to get them cataloged into our system. We are planning on ordering more storage carts for these for ease of transporting to classrooms. We have 3 staff members training now on Google. They will be training our staff once their training is complete and times are agreed upon. We hope to let staff use the Chrome Books prior to training just to become more familiar with them. It is recommended that this be a 6 month to 1 year process. Remember that our fall fundraiser helped to purchase additional devices. With the addition of approximately 25 more we should be able to test all third through fifth grade students with the new on-line testing requirement with no problem. Many thanks go out to our students, parents, community and YC Board of Education for helping us reach this very lofty goal.

Teachers are sharing many ideas in grade level meetings and at individual teaming of other technology resources.

Grants-

BES has been awarded 6 grants so far this year. We are grateful for the hard work of Rebecca Fox (2 grants), Priscilla Dunn, Renee Duncan, and Erin Tipton for the extra time in working on these to benefit our kids and school. Also, our 4th grade teachers received a grant from Dollar General to purchase extra books for their classrooms.

We are presently working on a grant from Burroughs Welcome for $3,000 to purchase Science and Math materials and supplies. Thanks to Colby Martin for assisting with this and the Dollar General grant.

Partnerships-

In our partnership with Higgins Methodist Church to pilot the CIS (Communities in Schools) program, our students and school is benefiting from many volunteers, snacks, food, and clothing. Mrs. Leigh Bennett is our new liaison. She will be coordinating many of the activities. She has moved to the church and community from Virginia where she was an educator and administrator. We welcome her assistance and are grateful to all the people at Higgins for making this happen.
